Treść
This article aims at the presentation of an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in the bison herd in Smardzewice, Poland. The first case of bovine tuberculosis (BTB) in the European Bison Breeding Center in Smardzewice was reported in 2013. After bacteriological examination, isolation of an organism and confirmation of a bovine tuberculosis, the herd became the subject of a special veterinary care. Tuberculin test carried out at the beginning of 2014, resulted in the elimination of 6 animals. In three of them tuberculosis was confirmed microbiologically. In September 2014, the herd was tested again for tuberculosis. Two individuals were positive in the both, tuberculin eyelid skin test and interferon-gamma assay. Two animals were positive in tuberculin skin test only, while two others have been ositive in the interferon-gamma assay only. On 3 December 2014, having the results from NVRI in Pulawy, Director of Kampinos National Park petitioned to the Minister of the Environment for the decision of depopulating the European bison herd of Smardzewice Breeding Center, comprising 16 animals. The decision issued by the Minister of the Environment, stipulated that animals to be culled were only these six individuals that had positive tuberculin test reaction. Following this decision, the animals were eliminated on 21 January 2015.The total number of 10 BTB strains (Mycobacterium caprae), were isolated from European bisons in Smardzewice. The source of infection for the entire herd was probably a cow, that arrived in 2005 from Silesian Zoological Garden. Recently, in the European Bison Breeding Center in Smardzewice 7 bisons remain.
