The trends in development of nanotechnology are assessed based on personal experience of the authors. The Nano 1 => Nano 2 transition is discussed and interpreted, as a transition where, on one hand, applications of nanotechnology are spreading in all sectors of industry, and new research challenges appear. The perception of the term nanotechnology by various stakeholders: academia, industry, public organisations funding research, and society, is discussed. According to the authors, we are in a period, where nanotechnology is becoming so common, and is present in all areas of industry that in most cases mentioned any more as a special kind of technology. Issues of low-cost production of high-quality nanomaterials, as well as their safety and regulation become of crucial importance for economic exploitation of the benefits of nanotechnology. However, the societal perception of nanotechnology is not matching its real understanding and widespread application in science and industry. This may rise barriers for its applications and commercialization. At the same time, research and application opportunities nanotechnology offers are increasing exponentially at a very fast rate. Rapidly expanding is the field of nanoarchitecture and nanobiotechnology, where various nanosized materials as well as molecules are combined in hierarchical nanostructures. Further, picotechnology is emerging, where materials are investigated and engineered at a less than 1 nm scale. Finally, nanotechnology is, or will be soon, offering solutions for most of the societal needs of the 21st century, like radically improved medical treatments and diagnosis, clean water supply, renewable energy supply, and low-cost communication technologies. It may lead also to breakthrough in artificial intelligence development.
