The influence of degradable polymer mulches on soil properties and cucumber yield

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of degradable mulches, a black polypropylene nonwoven with an iron stearate photodegradation activator (PP photod. 0.02%, 50 g m-2) and a black non-retractable polylactide nonwoven (PLA 50 g m-2), on soil parameters and yield of field-grown cucumbers. Results were compared to non-mulched control and black polypropylene nonwoven (PP 50 g m-2). Slightly higher temperatures under the PP photod., and lower temperatures under the PLA in comparison to the control were observed. Mulching with PP photod. increased organic carbon and macroaggregates contents, while under PLA more smaller (1.0 to 0.5 mm) aggregates were noted. The lowest nitrogen (N-NH4 and N-NO3) level was noted in bare soil. Higher marketable yield was obtained from mulched plots, with a greater increase in yield with both PP photod. and PLA mulching. Tested degradable mulches can be a good alternative to standard mulches and they can be recommended for cucumber growing.
