Background. The purpose of this study was to: (i) assess changes in anaerobic power, resting levels of blood hormones and the level of psychomotor ability occurring over an annual training cycle in highly-skilled female fencers, and (ii) test for differences in the mentioned biometric features in lower- and highly-skilled athletes. Material and methods. The sample comprised of six female fencers with higher skill levels (MS) and ten lower-skilled athletes (LS). The MS group was examined four times over an annual training season (10 months), while the LS group were randomly tested only once within this period. The study protocol was the same for both groups and conducted in the following order: morning blood sampling for determination of plasma cortisol and testosterone, performance of two psychometric tasks, one with a lower level of difficulty (LDT) and followed by a higher level of difficulty (MDT), and a 10-sec Wingate test executed by the lower limbs. Results. In MS group, there were no significant between-examination differences, except in the time sustained during maximal power output. The value of that variable was the lowest during the second examination. The MS group demonstrated better performance in the MDT test, while values of all other variables were similar to those observed in LS. Conclusions. The results showed that only a psychometric task with a higher level of difficulty can differentiate between fencers of various skill levels. Moreover, highly-skilled female fencers can maintain biometric abilities on comparable levels throughout an annual training period.
